1. Think about a time that you felt pain. How do you understand that experience differently now that you have read about pain and how it is measured? What physiological components might have been involved in your experience of pain?
2. Compare and contrast biomedical and cognitive therapies used to treat pain. Name two kinds of biomedical and cognitive therapies. What pain experiences does each kind of therapy seem to treat best?
You must add on or response to the following post with new knowledge. You can answer with the source of your choice.
3. I have a high tolerance for pain and thought the smiling faces where quite humorous for measuring it. The last time I felt pain was recently, which was caused by acute diverticulitis. I no longer find the visual and numerical rating scales for measuring pain as humorous or think of it as childish. I understand the subjective nature of pain. The physiological experience that might have been involve were more of signals traveling from my peripheral nerve fibers to the spinal cord, and from there to the thalamus which relayed the pain message to my cerebral cortex. This sensory information was integrated with my emotional and cognitive state which elicited me to seek medical attention immediately.
As a young elder middle class black female, my experience to pain was not shaped by the meanings that were attached to my age, gender, culture, or religion. Straub, 2019 cautions the generalizing about group differences because not everyone conforms to behavioral norms to the same degree. My pain behaviors are taking prescribed medication to relieve the pain or whatever medical treatment is necessary.
