There are several possible etiologies for headaches during pregnancy. Causes of headaches during pregnancy includes primary headaches such as cluster, tension, or migraine, preeclampsia, cerebral venous thrombosis, pituitary apoplexy, subarachnoid hemorrhage, arterial dissection, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, meningitis, and carbon monoxide toxicity (Schoen, Cambell, & Sadosty, 2015).

Subjective- The clinical presentation is acute as in an inflammatory reaction. The patient’s first complaint may be fatigue followed by the onset of flu-like symptoms and breast tenderness. The involved breast segment may be described as red, tender to painful, warm, or hot, and swollen. A fever of at least 37.8 degrees C (100.0-degrees F) can be expected accompanied by myalgia, malaise, and chills. Nausea and vomiting can also accompany these symptoms. The majority of patients with periductal mastitis are asymptomatic (Dunphy et al., 2019).
Objective- On physical exam, varying degrees of erythema and edema of the affected breast may be noted. The erythema is most commonly presented in a V-shaped distribution and may or may not feel hard. Occasionally there will be purulent nipple discharge. There may or may not be a palpable blocked duct (Dunphy et al., 2019).

Blood pressure needs to be monitored routinely throughout pregnancy (August & Sibai, 2021). Signs and symptoms of preeclampsia such as headaches, trouble breathing, and peripheral edema should be included in assessments (August & Sibai, 2021). If neurological symptoms are present the patient should also be referred to neurology (August & Sibai, 2021).
