You need to read “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” by Alan Turing and “Do Computers Think?” by John Searle (both are located in the Mind section of Cahn’s textbook), before writing your paper.
Construct an essay for the below topic. Your essay should be a minimum of 800-1000 words. Your essay should have an identifiable thesis that states the paper’s position and gives the reader a rudimentary outline. Once again, it would be helpful if you underline your thesis.
The paper should conform to MLA formatting: a heading (left justified), one inch margins, pagination in the header (right justified), double-spaced, and the font size should be no larger than Arial 12 point. You WILL use outside sources and/or directly quote from the readings, so you must cite sources both parenthetically and bibliographically (M.L.A. style of documentation). The instructor urges you to use more sources than the above essays to support your position regarding the below topic. Just be sure to use reputable sources (the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy and the Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy are both quite reputable, but your research may yield others).
Avoid first-person perspective, conversational English, contractions, inclusive pronouns, etc. While this is an opinion paper, it should be written academically (Standard Edited Written American English) and supported with both logical and empirical facts in order to make the paper’s position defensible.
TOPIC/PROMPT:
The imitation game is supposed to apply to the question of whether machines can think. Explain whether you agree with Searle or Turing about whether computers can think. While Searle is not a property dualist, what do you think are the implications of strong AI regarding human consciousness? Does strong AI suggest physicalism, property dualism, or some other explanation of consciousness?
