Young children must learn how to live in a society by learning from their parents or guardians. When a young child does almost any action they look to their guardians to see how they feel about it. If a toddler falls down, they might look around to see if the parents are upset before crying. If the small child falls over and looks up to see laughing and smiling people, the small child might laugh instead of cry as well. The first time I can recall receiving a strong emotion from my parents was when I took a pack of Pokémon cards from a store. I can’t remember exactly how old I was, but most likely 4 to 6 years old. I recall walking to the cards and putting a pack into my back pocket, and my mom seeing me do so. She yanked me up, took them out of my pockets, and punished me by not buying me any cards for an extended period of time. I remember feeling a decent amount of shame and guilt, but also upset I couldn’t get my cards. So it went from getting an extra pack to losing out on a handful over a period of time, which was a good way to deter me from taking things in the future.
