This will be group project. This project will be research paper which should be a minimum of 7-8 pages
discussing high availability and fail-over solutions for a virtualized infrastructure. Since the virtualization
technologies differ in regards to implementation of virtualized infrastructure, the group must choose
two virtualization platforms and compare and contrast high availability solutions. The following are
virtualization platforms to choose from: (Pick 2 platforms)
 ESX/ESXi Server (VMWARE)
 XenServer (Citrix)

 Microsoft Hyper-V (Microsoft)
 Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization {RHEV 3.0}

Each group’s research paper must discuss virtual machine availability, disaster recovery and
backup/recovery solutions related to business continuity for an organization. This paper should clearly
outline the following subjects:
 Backup/Recovery implications for virtual machines
 High Availability design and tools to assist virtual machines recover
 Disaster Recovery design over geographically dispersed locations
The research paper should contain detailed diagrams and must contain clear explanation of the solution
chosen and implemented. Each group’s research paper should outline considerations regarding
hypervisor capabilities, virtual networking, virtual storage, transactional failover, virtual memory and
data center considerations. Each group’s research paper should discuss topics such topics as:
 Image& file-level backup of guest operating environment
 Guest O/S crash consistency functionality
 Application crash consistency checks (If a guest OS was running Exchange or SQL server, how
would it recovery from a crash?)
Discuss in details each platform tools for recovering from disasters / file loss, deletion, corruption and overwritten user files and folders. Each paper must concluded by deciding which platform has superior functionality and solutions.
