SHIFT ON WESTERN CULTURE
Reading summary
Within a group of people behavior
so we also looked at a paradigm shift that was lacking a radical major change
that happens within the culture we’ve seen some of that we began back in
Mesopotamia we looked at that my the people came together the commonality that
held them together was was the script the writing the math the sharing of the
god they all seem to have the same kind of God and they came up with something
that was very unique at that time Hamurabi came up with some laws in order to
182 the color coded laws that he came up with and so that was that was good for
that b.s. then because it was put a culture together and gave them some
standard to live by we also went over to Egypt we studied about the learn the
math and the construction techniques that they used in the God that they have
as well. We jump to the greaseball they had they have had a tremendous
influence on wealth Western culture had they not we looked at philosophy we
looked at art we looked architecture architecture education science so many
things but you know we look at their philosophy and we kind of go back to
Socrates and Plato and Aristotle we look at the God they Ok they really knew
how to think. However, I think they knew how to ask the question why and I don’t
think it’s wrong to ask the question why they were just coming up with the
wrong answers and came up with a nod is individual as an individual is very
prominent even today. In Western culture that promotes I mean you know in vision
pretty much as in even in Christianity to the extent because every individual
has to come to Christ themselves it is not a group a group thing or even a
cultural thing it’s an individual type thing Roman culture we studied some
chapters on that. So I’m not going to get into a lot of that but you know they
were you know started in 500 b.c. they had a tremendous influence on Western
culture we looked at their architecture we looked at their government the laws
they were Barry Pollack the use of what we also see during this time we see
Christianity coming on the scenes that would be a definite paradigm shift
within Western culture. We look at Christianity it did have an inroads into
west into Rome in the things that they did. Why did it and it goes back to goes
back to Christ and it goes back to John 316 For God so loved the world that He
gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish
but have everlasting life and so we see that and so what we see is that what
Jesus told His disciples what the come the number one commandment is love the
Lord your God with all your heart mind and so and the 2nd is like into it love
your neighbor as you love yourself and so when when believers in Christ applied
those attitudes and those last styles to Roman culture it had an influence it
did effect that sexually immoral direction that Rome was taken and so it did
have it just like today we can impact our culture if we follow the principles
that are in Scripture and stay focused on what God tells us to do or what
culture tells us to do and so then we develop into the Roman Catholic Church
covered a lot of that they had a huge huge influence because because they were
the dominant way to see God or the way to get to God from probably 300 a.d. up
into the 1500s it continued to be that away but the process of reformation
Kamala Singh and it changed all it so I don’t need to get into the lot of the
the church time and what their beliefs were but what I what I see is it looks
like you had tradition in the pope and scripture kind of got on the same equal
basis and I think best the Protestant Reformation started because some of these
type of things and then we look at the Protestant Reformation one of my
favorite studies is because it shows the commitment in the conviction that
people can have and you have to have it because this was a time once you took a
stand like Martin Luther did and you said here I stand I can do no other you
put your laugh on the ladder I mean that as a conviction and so he introduced
things the word Latin words that are so applicable to what the Christian life
is about sola scriptura scripture alone. Soul a feeling we’re saved by faith
alone so aggressive that we are saved by grace alone Sola Kristoff we are saved
by Christ alone and last when the last of the fossil as a soul a day Gloria to
God goes all the glory those are things that we can take from the process of
reformation put them in today and so then after we see a little bit that we
looked a lot of the Renaissance and we think about that we think Ok these are
national divisions that are here they want not necessarily nasty little
divisions we look back and we can see the Renaissance it’s almost like the
Renaissance went back those people went back to Greek culture and said you know
we want to be it we want to be educated we want to do these things and be like
them and so the Renaissance was a dominant period Ok we need to be here we need
to be all that we can be in mankind but then that’s going to develop into the
what we call the age of an allotment there’s a I’m not gonna get into a lot of
that right now because we have a good video presentation this done on that
particular time it’s called The Age of raising a good reason and so we see that
in so that saying that God’s off somewhere he may or may not have created the
universe but man can is smart enough to figure this out we can reason these
things out we can find truth outside of God and that’s going to develop into
what we call romanticism back in the 18 hundreds and we’re going to see how
that how that develops and how we look at pulling away from God We can make man
good he can be good if we just will direct him in teaching good and so Darwin
comes along in a in the middle of 18 hundreds and that gives many people the
the belief we can be. Human beings on the earth without having to teach and
learn about God so that develops in the modernism and not going to get into too
deep into that but it’s basically what man can is seeking to get away from God
and His standards so that they can do kind of what they want to do and so we.
We covered Darwinism and we covered evolution a little bit very very slight but
it is such a dominant force that this driving the culture even today you have a
think about Darwinism has been around since probably about 160 years and it’s
almost like is is a kind of study of these particular aspects. Of Christianity
and secularism and humanism It’s almost like they’re traveling together and
Christianity is over here secularism is growing and they kind of ebb and flow
back and forth but if you stop and think about it if we if we enter the into
this 20th the 20th century that we look at that we see that Darwinism and
evolution is beginning to make inroads into the moral foundations of Western
culture because Darwinism and evolution are based on having man can hear
without having a god involved and so this is going to affect this later
generation the 21st century when we when we look at that just a minute because
as we learn before Ideas have consequences the idea in the theories about
evolution are going to have consequences at the end of the the 19th century
20th century as well as we enter into the 21st century Ok what do we see in the
21st century is kind of interesting is that we are living it we are living what
we’re what we’re talking about right now and so we see technology we see social
media we see communication Internet art that we see Hollywood we see the
university promoting certain things because when we look at. Greece and we look
at Rome we see how they promoted their values we talked about that the very 1st
chapter of the book is promoted through art is composed commode through drama
visual art have our values promoted today but actually the same way they’re
promoted through art they’re committed to communication look at Hollywood look
at the movies I mean it totaled 247 all the time you can watch something but
understand here’s the key is that there are certain values that are promoted
within this Hollywood or this media area and so it’s going to have an effect
upon the kids upon the people that are live living in. The culture which is us
and so what we see is that back in the day the process of reformation giving
example the Protestant Reformation information was shared and communicated
written form by the printing press they were all excited how we can actually
print something and pass it around now you can communicate instantly all over
the whole world and so values behaviors and beliefs that used to take hundreds
of years thousands a year they can be changed in a few years because because of
the communication also by who’s pushing the communication who’s doing that and
so it’s led to areas of black head in your textbook radical individualism and
that’s the the idea that I can live my life as I choose because that’s the way
I choose to live it. And so it runs into a viewpoint of secularism called socio
cultural secularism So that kind of slow because this 3 word and look look at
that what that me what that main is that you were living your last without a
thought of God without the judgment of God without the sin of God deciding
what’s right and wrong for yourself and you’re not going to be bound by
Christian morals or religious morals and so we see that and so what we have
also come in Western culture today in the 21st century because as believers we
need to be like the tribe of issue car we need to understand the times in which
we live we need to be able to see the sexual and more revolution that’s
sweeping across western culture right now and it’s having a tremendous effect
upon families upon marriages among kids upon the moral foundations that have
been around and created by Christian principles have been around for thousands
of years within a very short period of time a lot of those have been turned
upside down and so I believe that this is the next paradigm shift 100 years
years from now I believe most and this is not in that that this will be one of
the paradigm shift of Western culture we look at the value of human life. From
a Christian perspective we see that all life is valuable to that God created
but in Western culture today there’s almost been a devaluing of human lath
since 1973 since Roe versus Wade up into the present there have been almost
60000000 babies killed through abortion just in the United States that’s the
population of California New York there are many countries in Western culture
today a lot of states in the United States they have passed laws approving
euthanasia a doctor assisted suicide you can kind of see what those are I mean
it is as described Dr Assisted suicide means that a doctor going to help you
kill yourself and so there’s been a devaluing of lath and so we’re going to see
I believe in the future there’s going to be a clash between the radical
individual ism the sexual more revolution the sweeping and it’s going to vary
it’s going to run headlong into religious freedom and freedom of speech and
freedom of speech the things that we saw during the Protestant Reformation and
so what are we to do somebody asked me of. What are we supposed to do about
this and mine is like you understand the times in which you live you continue
to be decide and life of the world but 9 Lee you stop that you stop you pull
back you take a deep breath and you say who’s in ultimately in charge we have
to look at Martin Luther What did he say you go to Sola Scriptura here I stand
I can do no other Martin Luther was not standing his ground on his opinions he
was standing his ground on God’s unchanging truth we look at Genesis 11 sit sit
sit all in the beginning God created the heavens and the air God created
everything
