“Disabled or Different”

PROMPT:
In 1991 the American with Disabilities Act was implemented across the United States. Deaf individuals do not consider themselves disabled; however, they benefit from legislations created to end discrimination against disabled people. Discuss in detail how these conflicting beliefs can lead to feelings of empowerment and equality among the American Deaf community, while at the same time further imbed within mainstream society attitudes of paternalism and audism towards the American Deaf community?
PURPOSE:
To apply information into an analysis of how one can be ethical responsible in their understanding and interactions with Deaf who are seen as both disabled and different.
Write a 4 page (approximately 1,000 words) MLA style research paper.
In your paper you should talk about each of the following issues as you try to explain how being labeled disabled is both a good thing and a bad thing for the Deaf community:
What the ADA is?
How the American Deaf community benefits from the ADA?
Explain empowerment as it applies to the American Deaf Community.
Explain “audism” and how it affects Deaf.
Explain the conflicts that arise within the American Deaf Community of being seen as both a distinct culture/a linguistic minority and a disabled group.
Also,
Drawing a map of your ideas is helpful in many ways.
First, people often find that seeing a visual representation of their thoughts helps them to add more ideas and sort through them.
Also, Please draw an idea map and submit it as separate document. Drawing a map might help you see how your thoughts connect to one another, which will help you when you begin organizing your essay.
In the center of the map, write your topic and draw a circle around it.
When you come up with a new idea, write it down, draw a circle around it, and draw a line to show how it connects to the topic in the center and/or the other ideas youve written down.
Look at the main ideas youve written and see if you can think of other ideas that connect to them.
Remember that it is okayactually, it is greatif you have many ideas right now.
You wont necessarily use all of them in your essay, but all that’s important is to collect many ideas right now.
The “idea map” that I uploaded in the files section uses a sample essay topic to show you what yours might look like.
