Why is it that Indigenous Peoples in Canada have a higher mortality rate opposed to the average Canadian?

Since time immemorial, Indigenous Peoples have been deeply connected to the land and it’s abundance. The bond and spiritual connection they had to the land may be argued that it ran deeper than is observed today in indignenous communities. The land provided them the means to live a long and healthy life. However, with the eventual settlement of the land that we call Canada today, came colonial systems that have significantly impacted the health and well-being of Indigenous Peoples. Why is it that Indigenous Peoples in Canada have a higher mortality rate opposed to the average Canadian?
