PAPER #1: FICTION AS HISTORICAL INTERPRETATION
Rough Draft Due: September 24, 2021 (at least 4 full pages)
Final Draft Due: October 15, 2021 (at least 5 full pages, no more than 7 full pages)
The purpose of this assignment is to give you some experience analyzing a work of fiction as a historical interpretation of the Vietnam War. You will choose one short story, a collection of connected short stories, a novel, or a film from the list below and answer a series of questions about the chosen work. You will also have to do a modest amount of library research on the historical background. Please start that research with the recommended scholarship and use scholarly books and articles, and do not rely on the internet. Any scholarship you cite should appear in your bibliography. Your paper should read like a single coherent piece of writing rather than disconnected answers. Please include the questions in your paper.
Before answering the questions, name or describe the work in question (give a title), the author or director, the country and date of the original publication, and, if applicable, the country and date of the translation. It should take you at least 5 pages (double-spaced) to answer these questions. If it the work was published or produced in Vietnam during the war, be sure to indicate if it was the Republic of Vietnam or the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
(1) Provide basic biographical information on the life and career of the author/filmmaker. When and where was s/he born? (If appropriate, when did s/he die?) Where has the author lived? What is the author’s relationship to the Vietnam War? (If there is little information available about the author, just state that.)
(2) What is the plot or narrative? When and where does it take place? This section should be no more than one full page.
(3) What events or aspects of the Vietnam War does the work reflect? Alternatively, does the work explore the experience of a specific group or groups? Please identify and explain the events or aspects or specific group, and provide specific examples from the text.
(4) What seems to be the intended meaning of the text in relation to the Vietnam War or its aftermath? In other words, what does the author want us to understand about the conflict? Support your answer with evidence from the text.
(5) What is the latent (unintended) meaning of the text? In other words, what does the author/creator leave out of the narrative politically and historically? This is an opportunity for you to consider what is missing and why these omissions matter within the context of the course.
Format and Policies
Rough and final drafts must be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins. You must use a 12 point, Times New Roman (or equivalent) font. There should be no extra spaces after paragraphs. Points will be deducted for deviations from this requirement (e.g. use of a larger font, manipulation of margins, etc.).
Rough drafts must be 4 full pages to receive full credit, and the final draft must be 5 full
pages to do the same. The grade for the paper will be lowered 3% if the rough draft is too short and 3% if the final draft is too short. The upper page limit for your final draft is seven full pages, and you will receive a grade based on the first seven pages only. The grade for the papers will be lowered by 5% for every day that the rough draft is late and 10% for every day the final draft is late.
If you write on a work from the “United States” list for this paper, then you must choose a Vietnamese or diasporic Vietnamese for Paper #2. If you write on a Vietnamese or diasporic Vietnamese for this paper, then you must choose a work the from “United States” list for Paper #2.
