Kit Yuen Quan Kit Yuen Quan – Alternative Formats details the struggles she faced in migrating to the United States and trying to adapt to American society. Rebecca Chiyoko King Rebecca Chiyoko King – Alternative Formats argues that our identity is “flexible, but that it is not a choice which is unconstrained” (1997:125).
Examine the struggles Quan faced using insights from two class readings plus the King article, and two theoretical perspectives. The theoretical perspectives we have covered include structural functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. Your discussion also needs to include at least four sociological concepts. You will mark the names of those concepts with boldface and underlines.
One of the readings you must use is King’s article. Apply King’s three-level model of racial formation (self-perception, presentation of self to others, and negotiation with a larger group) to examine Quan’s struggles. This can include:
How Quan performed an ethnic, racial, gender, or class identity through social interaction.
How Quan’s ability to claim a particular group (ethnic, racial, gender, or class) identity was limited by social facts.
Extend the discussion of Quan’s struggles by discussing an example from your own life in which you struggled to claim a particular identity. Unlike the example above, your personal identity example is not limited to an ethnic, racial, gender, or class identity. Show your command of the class material by analyzing that example using the class perspectives.
