Although this has been an ongoing debate for some time, I feel like mothers should be allowed to breastfeed anywhere. My initial reaction was people need to realize breastfeeding is a natural process that infants are reliant upon. An infant does not want to wait ten or fifteen minutes to be fed, they expect instant gratification and make this fact known, loudly. So, I do not see the harm in allowing somebody to feed their children in public. I could see some people having a problem with mothers feeding their children while being fully exposed, but if the mother is doing it modestly, I do not see why it is such a big deal. Breastfed infants rely heavily on their mother’s milk for nutrition and to help boost their immunity. These two factors are essential for a child’s healthy development.
I believe this stigma stems from centuries ago where modesty was a top priority. Women could not even show shoulders back then, but I think this stigma against public breastfeeding is unjust and discriminatory. In other countries, public breastfeeding is embraced. In America, women are shunned and asked to leave public areas for feeding their hungry children. This type of practice is not only wrong to mothers but also to the infants who rely on their caregivers to stay strong and healthy.
I believe a correlation is present between this negative stigma and the massive drop in breastfed children at one years old. This is most likely due to mothers being shunned and criticized publicly. Public humiliation is mortifying and could be a cause for this drop. Some other factors could be pressure from peers and family to stop. Some people can be very opinionated and believe that breastfeeding needs to end at a certain age. Other causes could be that it is too painful for the mothers to continue to breastfeed. All the above could account for this correlational finding.
