Explain how you will use one of the strategies in your classroom so that your students are developing oral language (using a Kagan or collaborative strategy) while simultaneously developing vocabulary skills through repeated exposures in different contexts.

Vocabulary Strategies Discussion
Semantic gradients
(Links to an external site.)are used to develop vocabulary and highlight
the nuances in shades of meaning. Click on the preceding link and learn deeper
information about semantic gradients. Cognates use similar words between two
languages to enable English Language Learners to assimilate common vocabulary
terms. Beware of the false cognates that can mislead ELLs! Here is a quick link
to the Reading Rockets article for Vocabulary and ELLs (Links to an external
site.). You should refer to the readings and lessons previously presented
during this week for additional information on cognates to reference in your
discussion.
Vocabulary instruction is crucial in order for your students
to become fluent, expert readers. Effective instructional strategies should
provide repeated exposures to vocabulary words in a variety of contexts.
Consider the instructional strategies you have just learned about, cognates and semantic gradients or another
one of your choosing. Select one of the following to present in the discussion
format.
1) What do these strategies (semantic gradients and
cognates) look like in a classroom? What steps do teachers take to implement
these strategies while also ensuring their students participate in oral language development?
Include details, examples, and insights. Explain how you will use one of the
strategies in your classroom so that your students are developing oral language
(using a Kagan or collaborative strategy) while simultaneously developing
vocabulary skills through repeated exposures in different contexts.
OR
2) Using the Teaching Reading Sourcebook or the But I’m Not
a Reading Teacher text, locate an instructional strategy for vocabulary that
you plan to use which will align with your Rough Draft lesson plan and
ultimately, your Final Literacy Infused Lesson Plan. Share the details and
overall components of the lesson strategy.
OR
3) How will you include academic vocabulary in your
instruction? What academic vocabulary words (But I’m Not a Reading Teacher, pp.
27-29, and Florida Language Arts Standards Implementation Guide, pp. 57-60)
will you specifically target? Remember that academic vocabulary terms are NOT
those content-focused terms. Academic vocabulary are the words found across
content-area subjects which impact students’ ability to comprehend
informational texts. How will these be taught and integrated?
