Augustus was the first emperor of Roman and one of the most significant figures in world history. In an essay of two full paragraphs, answer the following questions: How did Augustus subvert or undermine Rome’s political traditions and transform it from a republic to an empire? More importantly, how did Augustus justify this action? How did he make himself appear as the legitimate leader of Rome? Here, you should think about how he presented himself to the Roman people through art and literature. In answering these questions, I expect you to give three specific examples of how Augustus undermined the traditional Roman system of government. I also expect you to give three specific examples of how Augustus justified this revolutionary change. How did he convince the Roman people to accept his rule?
I expect you to use at least two examples from each of the following sources: my lecture on the Roman Empire, Suetonius’s description of Augustus (provided in the readings), and the BBC podcast on the sculpture of Augustus.
Your essay will be graded on the following criteria:
Does the essay have a clear thesis statement? (5 points) Remember, a thesis statement is what you will prove or show in your essay. It is more than a vague discussion of what you will discuss, like “In this essay, I will discuss Augustus and his political revolution.” Moreover, it must be more a statement of opinion. It must be a statement of what you will prove with evidence.
Does the essay have well-organized paragraphs? Does each paragraph have a topic sentence that introduces its main idea and does each sentence in the paragraph relate to that main idea? Ideally, you should also link the ideas in a paragraph to each other, so that readers can see how the ideas in a paragraph are connected. (5 points)
Does the essay provide at least two examples from each of the sources indicated? Are those sources properly explained to the reader? Remember, you need to do more than simply drop in a quote or an example and assume that its meaning is clear. (20 points)
