Identify, research, analyze, and report on a specific corporate industrial ecology problem. The required final report will evaluate an instance of a corporation or industry managing complexity in a responsible (or irresponsible) manner and provide a specific solution or action plan. The report is not simply a literature review. The report should certainly review and summarize current literature, but it must also have an identifiable client, and provide that client with specific solutions and steps to take to improve identified weaknesses.
Analyses of “current” problems are preferred and real solutions are sought, though historical examples can be used if they are handled carefully. Analysis of historical instances must be sure to address the requirements for meeting the goals of the industrial ecology consultant report and provide a unique spin and solution space that leads to realistic alternative futures. Please cite specific principles of IE and SE and demonstrate what firms must do or, if a historical failure is discussed, propose alternative approaches and maintain a well-scoped solution. The report should document corporate uses of IE principles and tools, and propose how a firm should be using such tools and applying the principles. Two general kinds of report will be acceptable:
One which identifies a “wicked problem” and proposes an adaptive management plan for managing the issue, or
One which defines a specific instance of industrial symbiosis and proposes a preliminary design for implementing it.
In all cases, coverage of specific IE themes (e.g., quantifying sustainability, lifecycles, material flows, complexity, adaptive management, etc.) must be included and previous papers will assist in ensuring the inclusion.
Required Interim Deliverables:
Proposal including identification of the client and the issue (a single paragraph with clear statement of the problem and your management thesis is adequate). Be sure to provide a strong and clear thesis which states the problem and solution in one sentence or two.
Boundary analysis of the problem space (essay length scoping document plus at least one figure that clearly defines the problem and solution space, identifying the parts of the problem and the extent of the proposed solution).
The previous papers directly contribute to the final product, the consultant report. you should not simply paste the papers into a final paper, but the writing papers should be used to inform the consultant report, although substantial reuse is acceptable when it is appropriate to the structure of the final product.
