The stories we have covered (William Gibson, Neuromancer (1984)in the third unit center on artificial and posthuman life forms. This second assignment asks you to adhere to these themes as you advance an original argument. For instance, you might write an essay about artificially constructed life forms (e.g. artificial or virtual intelligences) and how these representations function in several stories from the collection. They might raise questions about how to define “humanity” or they might question the effects of technology on human life. Alternatively, you might examine how a story (or stories) imagines the world differently relative to the social, cultural, and historical context in which a story (or stories) emerge.
