Comment on the role the setting plays in any of the stories or poems we’ve looked at in the course so far. How does the author use the setting (not just where the work takes place, but how it is representedby the author) to develop or complicate one of the work’s major themes/ideas?
Focusing on either Kincaid’s “Girl” or Cisneros’ “My Lucy Friend Who Smells Like Corn,” discuss the way the author uses a particular narrative voice to develop or complicate the story’s meaning. How does that voice help the author tell the story behind the story?
Focusing on Frankenstein, discuss the role of the frame narrative. Why does Shelley place the story of Victor and his monster within another story?
In both Lee’s “Persimmons,” and Baldino’s “Passing,” the authors discuss objects (an ordinary piece of fruit and hyperrealistic glass flowers) as complicated symbols for cultural and gender identity respectively. Choosing one of these works, discuss how these objects help the poem’s speaker come to a greater understanding of him/themself.
Your essay should have a thesis, which is clearly and concisely stated in the introductory paragraph. Your thesis should be supported by specific, carefully-chosen evidence in the form of passages quoted from the work in question and properly cited in ML A format. It should be organized in a way that is logical and easy for your reader to follow. And finally, it should be written in a clear and effective style. Use the various essay writing resources provided to you on Blackboard, as well as any material covered in the lectures and workshops, to ensure that you understand each of these major components of your essay.
