Dietary supplements are popular. Americans spend billions on them, and the use of supplements has dramatically increased in the past few decades. Supplements do play a vital role in helping to supply what a diet may lack. Thus, there are valid reasons for using them. At the same time, are they an adequate substitute for the nutrition that comes from wholesome and nutrient dense foods?
Read chapter 12 and “Position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: Micronutrient Supplementation”. Then, answer the following questions:
What are dietary supplements?
Are dietary supplements healthy? Why or why not?
Discuss three (3) valid reasons for using dietary supplements.
Do you use dietary supplements? If so, what benefit are you obtaining from them? If not, would you benefit from adding them? Why or why not?
Finally, consider the following statement: It is better to get nutrients from food rather than from supplements. Discuss whether you agree or disagree.
