Examine God’s purpose and vision for family

This week, we examine God’s purpose and vision for family. Taking what you learned this week, write a 300-350 word reflection on your own family experience. This reflection can focus on your marriage, your parents (biological, adopted or foster), siblings, etc. Be sure to connect your personal reflection to material studied this week. For example, you could discuss your marriage in light of what you learned about marriage as a covenant versus a contract. The family is the fundamental unit of society. This is rooted in the way God created human beings as man and woman. The book of Genesis states: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24 ESV). Here we see one man united to one woman in marriage. The two now form one new family. Through this union, the married couple is able to keep God’s original command to “be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion” over all of creation (Genesis 1:28).

As we consider how to Challenge Culture as a Christian, we attempt to answer the enduring question of “What is good, true and beautiful?” This question can and should be applied to all areas of life. What is a good society? What is a life based on truth? What is a beautiful marriage? These are only a few examples of the questions we must ask.
Since Scripture is the final authority of goodness, truth and beauty, we must constantly turn to the Scriptures to help us Challenge Culture. This week, we will examine the family because of the fundamental role it plays in the life of a Christian and society at large. Note that this examination is also rooted in the questions, “Who is God” and “What is a human being?” Family is clearly rooted in how human beings were created as man and woman.
