Emelie has had five nursing positions in 10 years. Her current nurse manager
has told her that she has held “a lot of positions” in a short time. One
of her former professors has said, “Five positions is not an unreasonable
number. You have to look at the circumstances.” Emelie asks a colleague,
Dale, who has already earned his Master’s in Nursing, for some advice.
CS Question: What 3 suggestions might Dale give Emelie that could help
her develop her résumé, which she will include in her Portfolio, and prepare her for an interview in a new position?

Dale could give several tips and tricks to improve on Emelie’s resume,
depending on the situation. If the roles are similar, perhaps she worked as a nurse on 2 different units, she could simplify and combine the roles while
emphasizing accomplishments achieved while there. Only include jobs that show
skill in the area being applied for. Fill the resume with objectives and skills
to offer instead of a chronological list of jobs. These three suggestions could
really improve her resume to ensure that call back.
For the interview itself, focus on your strengths while using vocabulary
that show you know the qualities of a leader. Use words like “honest”,
dependable”, “ambitious”, and “communicative with the team” as a few to show
you’re a team player with a thirst for improvement. This shows you have the
ability to advance in the company and perform at 100% while you work in the
meantime. “During the interviews, we focused particularly on the skills
required for the nurses’ career advancement. Additionally, we used probing
questions to obtain more in-depth information about the participants’ career
advancement experiences” (Sheikhi et al., 2016, p. 6). This might bring up past
jobs and why you aren’t working there anymore, but that’s okay. Many jobs can
mean many circumstances and a thirst for trying new things which is a positive
quality when employers are seeking new recruits.

Dale can suggest to Emelie to help develop her
resume and include in her portfolio is a description of herself. She can
also include her work experience with tasks and responsibilities she was
responsible for. Emelie can explain the circumstances if needed of why she’s
had five jobs in ten years. The last suggestion Dale can give to Emelie is
to include a cover letter. A cover letter allows you to introduce yourself and
include qualifications. “The portfolio facilitates the monitoring of nurses’
professional development and facilitates knowledge management” (Dehkordi et
al., 2019).
