Describe how the cod collapse to thepresent is an example of Regime Change and explain which system measures you think are best to document Regime Change.

1. In the Selkoe, et al. (2015) paper,
the authors suggest there are 7 principles of ecosystem management that help
address tipping points. They illustrate
these points by looking at the Pacific kelp, sea urchins, sea otter ecosystem
that has been studied by James Estes and his colleagues. The collapse of the Atlantic Cod in the
Northern Atlantic including off the New England coast, our coast, and on the
Grand Banks as well as the Eastern Atlantic was an ecological disaster on a
global scale. There is still not agreement on the causes of collapse in 1992
and especially the recovery (or lack of one) since then. Overfishing and climate change both seem to have
played a role. The collapse had serious
socio-economic consequences in both the US and Canada.
2. Identify the tipping points in the cod case study. (0.5)
3. Apply the Selkoe principles to the
cod collapse example and indicate which time period you are using: A. before
the collapse or B. the present going forward.
“A” is essentially what should have been done, and “B” is what could be
done to manage this species and its ecosystem more successfully in the
future.
4. Describe how the cod collapse to thepresent is an example of Regime Change and explain which system measures you think
are best to document Regime Change.
