Final Exam
How do I complete the exam?
Answer the questions in essay format. Each question
should start on a new page within the same document. Turn in the completed exam
to Blackboard by 11:59 pm on Sunday, July 25th. Late exams will incur a 25%
reduction for every 24-hours it is late. Exams must be in 12 point, Times New
Roman font, double spaced, with 1-inch margins. Please include your last name
and page number on all pages (in a header). Each question is worth 50 points.
Each question should be 2.5 to 3.5 pages in length
for a total of 7.5 to 10 pages.
How do I earn a good grade on this exam?
The following outline guidelines for your responses
that, if followed, will result in a quality exam. The extent to which you
deviate from these guidelines will obviously lower your grade.
You are demonstrating your
knowledge and understanding of the materials. Therefore, you should
provide thorough responses to the questions. In your responses, assume
that I have very basic or little knowledge about the subject
matter. Thus, you should make sure that you are providing detailed
explanations or definitions of concepts, theories, etc. and clearly
demonstrate how these fit with the focus of the question.
Your responses should be in
your own words. Obviously, you will rely (and must rely and cite!) on
our class readings and possibly other sources in crafting your responses.
However, you should paraphrase instead of relying on
quotes. Therefore, do not use quotes! Please remember that
changing a word or two is not paraphrasing.
Responses should reflect
university-quality writing. This includes the organization of your
responses, an absence of grammatical and spelling errors, and proper APA
citations of sources.
Okay, I am ready…bring it on! What are the questions?
1. Explain
why a critical perspective to organizational communication matters. What can we
learn from a critical perspective that other approaches (e.g., Fordism,
cultural, systems) do not help us understand? What are the strengths and
weaknesses of the critical approach? Be sure to use key ideas from course
materials to explain your essay.
2. Throughout
the bulk of the chapters, we have touched on the many issues of diversity that
impact organizations. Develop a detailed plan to increase diversity within your
organization (if you aren’t currently employed, use USI or a previous
employer). What challenges exist for your organization in achieving a more
diverse workforce? How would you address those challenges? What would you do to
increase hiring, retaining, and promoting a diverse workforce? [Please use a
different organization to analyze than the organization you are using for your
Case Study]
3. Throughout
the semester, we’ve talked about how organizations have more control in our
lives than ever before. Make a case whether this is a good or bad thing for
you, an individual worker. Do we want our work to have such a say in our
personal identity? Why or why not? Make sure you are using several class
concepts in your essay.
Any advice, Dr. Rick?
Yes! Start early. If you start the exam early
enough, it should be very manageable, and you will have time to thoroughly
address each question. I also suggest that you have a friend or family member
(who is not in the class) read the responses. They can serve as a spelling and
grammar check as well as indicate whether your response makes sense to someone
unfamiliar with organizational communication.
