The literature review process is the most crucial element of any research project, whether empirical or theoretical. A literature review provides the theoretical rational and empirical background for a given research topic. Quite simply, a literature review acknowledges that you have examined relevant sources within a particular topic of interest. Some guidelines for writing and creating literature reviews state that you should focus on the most recent research (5 years). Other guidelines note that the reputation of your topic will reflect the quality, depth and even length of your literature review. All guidelines, however, maintain that you must always acknowledge ‘classic studies’ within your topic of interest. Both of these approaches are valid and applicable to this assignment, but they are not etched in stone. Though you should acknowledge the historical depth of your area of research in your literature review, and analyze relevant research, our emphasis at this present moment deals primarily with form and organization.[1]

Components of a research paper change depending on the nature of the research, researcher and discipline. Other areas used are: methodology, analytical plan, etc. For this assignment you will be required to focus on the first two steps, along with a conclusion.

I. Introduction
a. What is your area of research?
b. Why should we care?
c. What is its relevance to Black Studies?
d. What is its relevance to African descended people?
e. What is its importance to you?
f. What is its importance to people of African descent?
g. How does this topic contribute to changing the life chances of people of African descent?
Make sure you answer these questions.
II. Literature Review
This section deals with the historical roots of your research topic and previous research conducted in this area or related areas. You should engage empirical and theoretical works that contribute to accurately understanding your topic of interest. For each empirical research article, make sure you describe the methods, principal questions and findings, among any other relevant information. For theoretical articles, summarize the basic themes and overall conclusions that the author(s) argue(s).
A very important aspect of a literature review is the smooth transition from paragraph to paragraph, article to article and study to study. Fluidity is key. If you provide summary after summary without any type of connective tissue between these works you will produce a boring and redundant review of literature, something that nobody would really be interested in reading. Therefore, you need to be concerned with smoothly moving from one article to the next in order to show your knowledge about your particular research topic. Some examples of key terms or phrases, which help with transitioning, are: comparatively, just like, as previously discussed, similarly, unlike, in comparison to, etc.
III. Discussion
At the end of your literature review make sure you question the validity of previous research, articles and arguments. Possible questions include:
a. What were the weaknesses?
b. Are there any gaps in the research? What are these?
c. Where does the research need to go now?
d. What are the agreements and disagreements amongst the articles reviewed?
e. What suggestions do you have for the disagreement(s)? Etc.
f. What would your contribution to future research be within this area?
IV. Conclusion
Summarize the most fundamental ideas and arguments you have analyzed. Also explain how your understanding of this area of research and your own personal perception, comprehension and evaluation of this topic has changed and/or developed during the course of this assignment.
