CD2: Leadership
CD2 focuses on leadership through the perspective of different authors. The Collins and Hurd readings are representative of a new topic area in leadership, namely authentic leadership. The Ashford and Kellerman articles represent a more traditional perspective on relationship building. The Spreier and Toegel articles address personal characteristics that underlie effective leadership behaviors. The Danny Shader and Bob Holden videos represent examples of leadership challenges as described in their own words.
You probably have some notion, based on experience, of what it means to be an effective leader. Some issues to consider are:
When is leadership especially important in organizations?
How is leadership effectiveness different or similar for middle versus senior managers?
Are leaders in short supply in organizations while we have a surplus of effective managers?
In what way does national culture influence how we define leadership?
Is someone you know (or know of) an example of an effective leader? Why?
A key interest is how you see yourself as a leader in an organization.
You will see a number of discussions that begin with “CD2.” Each relates to leadership and is aligned with specific authors or videos. Review all materials. Choose those authors and videos that had the most impact on you (positive or negative); there should be more than one. I am hoping that from our discussion we will be able to identify some streams of common thought and some areas of differences. I have posted some introductory questions in each CD2 thread, but feel free to post your own questions, along with your perspective in relation to the question.
It is critical that you extend the discussion from where it left off. Try to avoid simply responding to the original question without reading subsequent responses. It may be a good idea to read posts periodically to stay up to date, maybe responding with basic comments – then coming back after you have taken extensive time to reflect and analyze. Discuss what it is they said that caught your attention.
It is not necessary that you respond deeply to all threads, but you should participate extensively in two or three.
It should be clear from your activity that you have an in-depth understanding of the content provided to date, as well as the ability to synthesize, analyze, evaluate and draw deeper meaning.
Note: DO NOT post here. This area will be used to tally your discussion grades.
