Our AAS/HIW 351/LEH 354/WST 345 coursework examines ways in which African women and women of African descent have led through the coronavirus pandemic, in Africa and the African Diaspora, as their foremothers fought pandemics through the ages. To combat COVID-19, they have applied African indigenous leadership models such as Ubuntu (our shared humanity) and Badenya (mother-childness cooperation, collaboration, compassion empathy, solidarity, unity), as well as Dr. Kimberle Crenshaw’s framework of Intersectionality. In recognition of the transformative power of art to communicate, educate, empower, inspire, unite, advocate, to heal and move people to act, you are invited to share in this artistic project for your midterm assessment.
Your assignment consists in identifying or creating artwork: painting/mural/street art, sculpture, photograph, poem, short story, social media, spoken word, song, dance, play, video excerpt, or other artistic representation that is evocative of the issues we have looked at in this class. The range of choices is wide – you may come up with something that has personal relevance for you and artistically expresses the themes and spirit of our Africana Women and COVID class. You may also feel moved to conduct a comparative analysis of two relevant pieces of art.
Write a clear and concise essay where you present your selected or created artistic representation(s), and explain why it is that you chose it/them, and how it/they is/are relevant to main themes of our coursework. Make sure to refer to relevant scholars, activists, and course materials (texts, videos, maps, narratives) we have examined so far.
