Implicit or explicit assumptions about, and models of, the human and human nature undergird
entire systems of ethics, politics, and law. Choose two of the premodern authors (e.g. Plato,
Augustine, Aristotle, the authors of the Torah, the “Teacher” of Ecclesiastes, the author of the book
of Matthew, Saint Paul, Augustine) we have read and establish the notion of the human that they
imply or spell out. In your paper, be sure to address how differing conceptualizations of the human
being and the human condition function in the works of the respective authors you choose. How
does an author’s view of humanity dictate how they understand and construct the world in their
texts? Which portrait or account do you find most compelling and why? Where are the errors in the
respective accounts?

In a separate, subsequent paragraph (c.250 words, longer ok), reflect on the notion/s of the human
you see as influencing, consciously or unconsciously, society and politics in your own country or life (large city USA)
How is the human defined today? Are there still competing or conflicting conceptualizations? How do
these shape the world you live in? Your life?
