The cybercriminal implemented the malware on about 1,800 Target terminals to penetrate Target’s point-of-sale network. They wanted to take advantage of remote access by exporting copies of data to three servers located in Miami, Brazil, and United States. The breach happened by acquiring the customers’ information which includes PIN data, customer names, credit and debit card numbers, card expiration dates. During the breach at 10 am – 6 pm, the data was stored from every transaction from the magnetic stripe on the back of the payment cards. Cybercriminals use the data and sell them on the black market. The Target cards were sold in batches with prices ranging from $20 to $100 per card. Cybercriminals or buyers can use the credit card information and clone the card to make in-store purchases.
