Full inclusion is a provision associated with IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) where in theory, the disabled student is placed in a general education classroom for the full day. The are not “pulled” from class to receive supports and services but in contrast, the supports and services required to ensure an appropriate education “come” to the student in his/her general education class.
Using your text, videos, lecture notes, supplements and your own individual research on this concept/topic, I would like you to complete a 1500-2000 word written paper which addresses the following
Key questions:
-What are the benefits of a full inclusion program for the student, family and service delivery system (school and community).
-What are the possible detrimental or negative effects of inclusive programs for the student, family and service delivery system (school and community)
-Based upon your research, how effective are inclusive education programs?
-Do you support full inclusion? Or do you think it is not an achievable concept?
Remember to review your paper against the writing rubric, cite your work where needed and try to use critical thinking skills as your develop your responses.
Option #2-
Read the short “snapshot” case history of Teela on page 122 of your text. Imagine for a moment, that Teela does not come from this country. Imagine that, she and her parents have arrived 3 months ago from Mexico. The family speaks some English and they have been sponsored to live her by a local church and service organization.
Teela’s parents come from a different culture, where “exceptional” persons are pretty much segregated in school and other social settings. The parents are suspicious and skeptical of having their child in a full inclusion program here in the US.
Describe your explanation (for Teela’s family) of the various laws and guidelines for “exceptional” people in our culture. Describe how you would formally and informally propose addressing Teela’s needs as an exceptional person. Describe how you would address cultural diversity in developing person centered services for this individual.
Option#3-
As your professor in this course, I was very impressed by your discussion posts regarding your various educational experiences. I was dismayed, but not surprised at all, to find that most of you indicated very clearly, that your educational experiences DID NOT prepare you for many – and in some cases MOST – of the very important functional skills you would need in adult life.
In point of fact, many of you indicated that you perhaps missed certain opportunities in life due to an education system that failed to address your individual needs. This is very similar to what “exceptional” people experience on a regular basis.
Your paper, would be to describe in detail how a college online course (such as this one) could be better created and or adapted to meet the needs of a variety of exceptional people. You may wish to center on persons with Mild intellectual disability, ASD, persons with ADHD or perhaps people with a combination of “atypical abilities”. There are huge numbers of people with learning disabilities, attentional problems and emotional disturbances, all happening at once. How might you design such a course?
NOTE:
In any of the options, make sure to use your grading rubric as a guide , display your critical thinking skills and make sure to use some references by authoritative sources where needed.
Format: Written Research Paper – 1500-2000 words. Please note that you should complete this assignment as a Word document and use an attached file to submit. You cannot copy and paste into the submission box. Please make sure to keep a saved copy in your own course fil
