Overview:
An organization’s data is it
backbone. Business leaders cannot make sound decisions without good,
relevant data. This means that the collection and storage of data is
crucial to the viability of an organization. As such, many bad decisions can be made
regarding the handling of data. Many of these decisions can reach into
the realm of “questionable ethics.” In many industries, there are sound
compliance regulations that must be followed like the health care
industry and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPPA) compliance, for example. However, these types of compliance
regulations do not apply to all types of organizations; which leaves a
lot of room for potential issues.
To prepare:
Research topics involving ethical dilemmas in data warehousing.
Task:
Provide two examples of organizations which could, in theory,
have the potential for questionable ethics regarding the collection and
storage of large amounts of data in data warehouses.
Critically analyze these examples and discuss the ethical responsibilities of the organization and of IT professionals.
Discuss at least three ethical guidelines that should be implemented by these two example organizations for the protection of their data.
