Essay of the New Jim Crow

Michelle
Alexander chronicled a compelling narrative of the human tragedy of mass
incarceration. Her intention was to stimulate a national discussion about the
role of the criminal justice system in creating and exacerbating racial
hierarchy in the United States. I would like students to critically read and
analyze the New Jim Crow and write a minimum of a one page single-spaced
reflective essay that address the following:
What insights
did you learn from reading the New Jim Crow that you did not know before?
How can I use
the knowledge I gained from reading the events discussed in the book?
How does the
current system of mass incarceration in the United States mirror earlier
systems of racialized social control?
How does the
US criminal justice system create and maintain a racial hierarchy through
mass incarceration?
Each student
is required to write a critical response to at least two other postings by
students.
