Here are some things to keep in mind as you work on this:
A. The paper must be related to topics we cover in the course. So, obviously, anything related to Holocaust would be fine. This could deal with the causes of the Holocaust, the ‘Years of Persecution, 1933-38’, the ‘Years of Extermination, 1939-45’, or the after-effects/memory of the Holocaust.
B. If you decide to write a research paper related to one of our initial topics (antisemitism, racism, Social Darwinism, nationalism, eugenics), you must tie the topic in some way to the larger issue of the Holocaust. In other words, if dealing with racism, you can’t focus upon American racial systems or South African Apartheid, etc. The topic must relate to the larger course.
This assignment is intended to be a short paragraph in length. The purpose of this assignment is for you to start brainstorming topics that may become your final paper. Remember, IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND FROM THIS INITIAL PROPOSAL THAT IS FINE! You are not held to the topic discussed in this proposal.
How to go about this proposal:
1. For this assignment it is acceptable for you to say “I will write” or ‘My research proposal…” No need to avoid personal pronouns for this assignment.
2. This should be a paragraph in length.
3. In this paragraph, you may have a set thesis for what your topic will be, or you may simply record some questions you want to ask. This may be a very definitive direction for some students, and a loose conglomeration of queries by others. It is fine if you are not sure what you want to write about. However, I want you to start putting ideas on ‘paper’.
This assignment is worth 50 points. Here is how the assignment will be graded:
– Clarity of language and intent of proposal (30 points).
– Grammar and Spelling (10 points)
– Topic Centrality to larger course (10points)
