You will choose a non-communicable disease of particular interest to you (cancer, cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer). In a 12-15 page (double-spaced; excluding bibliography, figures, maps, and tables) paper you will do the following:
Describe your topic broadly. Identify a specific problem to be solved within your topic. Describe the problem and suggest explanations for why this problem exists. Propose a solution to the problem you have identified, referring back to theory or existing studies to support your argument for this approach. Describe explicitly how your solution addresses the problem and whose investment will be needed for its implementation. Address the perceived challenges to implementation and how you might overcome them.
The paper should include:
1) A broad description of your topic, including 1) a concise description of the basic facts of the health or disease condition, including the pathobiology and natural history; 2) the extent of the condition, or prevalence and incidence or mortality rates; 3) the consensus or accepted ultimate and proximate etiological factors, including the various social contextual factors (economic, political, cultural, and historical influences)
2) The identification of a specific problem to be solved and an explanation for the existence of that problem, for example:
While stroke mortality has improved globally, the incidence-to-mortality rate remains exceptionally high in the East Asia region compared to other regions/nations of similar economic development. In their 2014 review, Rush et al. several causes for this phenomenon including…
3) A proposal for the solution of this problem. Draw on the different intervention approaches described in the second half of the course to suggest one or more possible approaches to intervention on this issue. Draw on existing studies which have used similar approaches in other settings, or existing interventions for other conditions which may be adapted.
Give enough detail about your approach that it could be broadly followed and implemented by an interested reader.
Argue for your approach versus any other type of intervention strategy.
4) A description of whose investment would be needed for the implementation of this solution. Depending on the level of the intervention/solution proposed this may include multiple bodies, from government and international bodies to individuals and their families. Describe clearly why this investment from these individuals/organizations is needed for success and draw on existing studies to support your assertions.
5) A discussion of the perceived challenges to implementation. What barriers might someone face in implementing such an intervention? Given your existing knowledge, who might be likely to suffer from non-compliance? How would you ensure the success of your proposal?
