ANT 1500 Introduction to Social and Cultural Anthropology
Midterm Assignment
Dear Class,
Choose 3 groups out of the 4 possible groups below. You will answer ONE question from
each group you have chosen. You will submit a total of THREE responses.
DO NOT RE-WRITE THE ENTIRE QUESTION at the beginning of your
response/answer. Simply put the GROUP and the question you are answering.
For
example: “GROUP 1, Question 2”
***USE Times-New Roman font and SINGLE SPACE your answers. This makes it
easier for me to identify concepts in your work.
EACH answer should be approx. 425 words or .75 – single-spaced page (like the
previous assignments). But please, no more than 1 page per response.
*You are NOT to cite outside readings (including Wikipedia and other online resources,
etc.)
*For this midterm take-home, I will NOT be requiring citations from the readings. If you
do wish to use a citation, however, you can use up to TWO SENTENCES from the
reading in question, no more to support your argument. NO Long block quotes. You can
also cite/quote a portion or word from a sentence if you wish as per previous
assignments. Simply put the author and the page number in parenthesis separate by a
colon. For example, (Butler: 145). See WEEK 6 on the moodle syllabus for a refresher.
*Do NOT quote from outside sources. *Using a citation or not, will not directly affect the grade. You could use a citation and
still give a mediocre answer, and not use a citation and still give an excellent one—or
vice versa. You can use a citation for some answers and none for another if you wish.

Question 2) In relation to his experience, Lee states that there are “no totally generous
acts.” Do you think all “acts” [of giving] have an element of calculation? Is there such
thing as a pure gift? Start from the piece, then expand beyond it to reach/support your
own position with other examples.

Question 1) How do you define/describe “double-consciousness”? Keeping in mind that double consciousness, as we discussed in class, can also extend beyond race into other kinds of personal conflicts/identities, you can draw from personal experience if you wish. What does Du Bois mean when he suggests the painful two-ness of double consciousness might also be understood as the gift of “second-sight”? What might be necessary to move towards reconciling double consciousness, if possible?
For Readings:Conclusion: From Parody to Politics
Butler thinks of being, or the “to be” as an injunction, or command. “To be a good mother, to be a heterosexually desirable object, to be a fit worker…” Instead she says one should place an emphasis on “doing.” What does she mean by this? What does this shift in awareness from being to doing make possible? Ground your analysis via example(s).
