Analysis Paper 4 – Chapters 8 & 9
Purpose: This assignment focuses on dating, mate selection, and relationships as a single person or for those cohabitating.
Instructions: After reading Chapters 8 & 9 complete the following questions and post your assignment under the Content tab/Module where you found this assignment by 10:00 pm on the date listed for this week. Be sure to reference your resources within your answers (author and page numbers) and include a Works Cited listing.
Chapter 8 – in a two-page answer, address the following questions:
1. Outline the characteristics, benefits, and costs of traditional and contemporary dating patterns including the manifest and latent functions of dating. How has dating changed over time and how does dating differ across age groups? What are some of the benefits and costs of hanging out, getting together, hooking up, dinner dating, stayovers, and dating in later life?
2. How do filter theory, social exchange theory, and equity theory differ in explaining mate selection?
3. Describe the prevalence of dating violence, and explain why it occurs and its consequences. What factors help explain dating violence and date rape? Identify and describe 3 local resources for someone experiencing dating violence.
Chapter 9
First watch the following video (26 minutes) looking at singlehood, cohabitation, and same-sex relationships. Then answer the questions listed below in a two-page answer.

1. Describe the diversity of singles. Explain who lives alone and why including two of the theories of why more people are single today. Define and reference terms/concept/or theories you discuss.
2. Explain why cohabitation has increased. What are some benefits and costs to cohabitation?
3. How are same-sex and heterosexual couples’ stresses similar? How do they differ? Research the idea of church vs. state and give 2 examples of how our founding constitution deals with issues of church vs. state when it comes to marriage and families?
