STUDENT PARTNERSHIPS #5 –
Measurement Plan-Data Collection
ProcessThis Week’s Topic:
Measurement Plan—Data Collection Process.
The hallmark component of evaluation is measurement—allowing us to track change
and to respond clinically to the change we observe. Please describe your measurement
plan and how you derived it [why did you decide upon this plan?]. Your measurement
plan should include a description of the following: the type of measurement
instrument(s) you have chosen; strengths and weaknesses of the method
[e.g. observation, standardized instruments, individualized rating scale, and/or logs]
and specific instrument(s) where applicable [e.g. PHQ-9 Depression Scale]; what is the
source of the data and why? What days/times will the data be collected and why? And,
for how long will it be collected and why? Pay close attention when choosing methods of
measurement, the instruments themselves and your measurement plan to issues of
ethics, culture and diversity, and client input/self-determination relating to your client.
As always, one must consider the impact of implicit biases, explicit biases, systemic
racism, and structures that marginalize and oppress. What do we see? What do we
need help seeing? Consider yourself, your team partners, external systems, research
from which you gather information, assessment tools, processes and policies of your
organization, etc. Bias is likely to be found in each of these areas. Be open. Be
vulnerable. Be brave.
This is the case:
Setting: “Peer” Support Program
Client Information: J, is an able 25 year old, white male, living with his wife in their home, Veteran.
Chief Complaint : Feeling “down” as of late and has been more irritable with his bosses, co-workers, and spouse. Principally, does not want to “snap” at his wife.
Diagnosis: Adjustment Disorder (with mixed disturbance of emotions and conduct F43.25)
Dx Rationale: J was undergoing transition out of the military and into civilian life. J did not mentioned any previous mental health conditions – long periods of depressed mood and conduct outbursts were new to him.
Interventions: “supportive” psychotherapy utilizing techniques from IPT, CBT, and MI.
Measurements: No Standardized Instruments were used. We used an Individualized Rating Scale for 1) how irritable he felt (0-5) and 2) how depressed he felt (0-5) as log at the end of each day.
Measurement Rationale: Being in a peer setting, the setting did not lend itself to using standardized instruments. We identified his problem areas as his irritability and depressed mood, thus chose to track those. We chose to track at the end of the day, because it allowed him to reflect on the events of the day and figure and overall rating.
Measurement Outcomes:this appeared to function as a good instrument because we were able to adapt and change interventions to reflect the changes in the subjective mood rating scale. The continued use of these measures seemed to be validated by the appearance of improved affect with the measured improvements in mood according to the individual rating scale.
Discussion: What instruments may you have used? Do you have suggestions for future clients? Do you think that IRSs are helpful?

Collaborative Student Partnerships – Journal
Start Assignment
Due Nov 23 by 2pm
Points 30
Submitting a text entry box, a media recording, or a file upload
Available until Nov 23 at 2:10pm
Collaborative Student Partnerships Interactive Learning Model (team):
Collaborative Student Partnerships – a practicum that occurs during in-class time and outside of class time – is designed for students to apply the knowledge gained in the course and to develop the skills to do clinical case evaluation in varying and complex clinical situations rather than simply to talk about, read about, or intellectually know about clinical practice evaluation methods. Students will be placed in small Collaborative Partnership Teams for approximately 5-7 sessions.
Collaborative Student Partnership Interactions:
CSP Journal (Collaborative Student Partnership):
Collaborative Student Partnership Interactions will consist of interactions and gatherings both within class sessions and outside of class time. You will develop a Google workspace for slides that are shared with all of your team members and with the instructor. This will be your team’s workspace. All team members will contribute to the design and creation of this evolving project. Each week, before you meet with your team for the CSP Interaction sessions, a team member will write up and post a case scenario of a client with whom they have worked. The team will be asked to consider how they would work with the client based on the current topic we are discussing in class by posting comments, questions, reflections, inserting media or providing resources on the Google slide deck in response to the case scenario. Then, during your CSP Interaction session, you will use what you’ve posted on the slides as the jumping point for your in-class conversation. These slides will become your team’s “Journal.” An example of a Google slides/journal will be provided on Canvas.
Please note: Students are expected to act professionally and respectfully during this time. It is a professional meeting time to discuss and collaborate. If during the semester
