Rhetorical analysis ad campaign

What is a rhetorical analysis?
If we think of rhetoric as the art and practice of communication, then a rhetorical analysis is an analysis of the strategies and techniques that are used in a given form of communication. A rhetorical analysis considers WHY these decisions were made and what effect they were meant to have on a target audience to persuade them in some way.
What are we doing in this assignment?
For this assignment, I would like you to write a rhetorical analysis of an advertising campaign, which could be either commercially or culturally oriented. You will study your campaign and think about it from the perspective of both the rhetor (i.e. the person, group, or organization who made it) and the target audience. By analyzing the rhetorical devices in the campaign and their ability to reach the audience, you will make an argument about whether the campaign is effective and why (or why not).
What counts as an advertising campaign?
An advertisement campaign is a collection of advertisements produced by the same rhetor that has a unifying factor, such as a slogan, spokesperson, theme, plot structure, design, or something similar. Some advertisement campaigns are focused on persuading the audience to buy a product, like a can of Coke or a pair of shoes, while others are focused on persuading the audience to support an idea, such as taking action on climate change or promoting LGBTQ+ rights.
How do I choose?
You may choose either type of campaign, and it can appear in any form of media (TV, internet, print, billboards, radio, etc.). The campaign you choose should have at least 2-3 advertisements but not more than around 5-6. Your campaign should also NOT represent the entire history of a company or group. For example, analyzing Nike’s “Just Do It” would entail far too much since this has been the company’s slogan for decades. However, Nike has many “sub-campaigns” that include several commercials based on one concept or spokesperson that would work. Similarly, analyzing Black Lives Matter as an advertising campaign would be to broad. However, you could analyze a particular set of Black Lives Matter advertisements that are unified in some way. No political ads, please!
