RESEARCH PROPOSAL

The research proposal is considered to be the final project in the class. All of the assignments, course lectures, and exercises are intended to help you complete the research proposal. It is imperative that you read each chapter in the textbook carefully and complete the lecture in each session. Many resources and illustrations will be provided in each session that will greatly enhance your understanding of how to write a research study proposal The research proposal should be written using APA (American Psychological Association) writing format. Be sure to adhere very closely to the APA format. This assignment is worth up to 300 points.
Here is proper APA for a journal article – notice the capitalization rules for article titles
Cook, T. (2013). Recent criminal offending and suicide attempts: a national sample Social
Psychiatry & Psychiatric Epidemiology, 48(5), 767-774.
You should be sure to include in the research proposal the headings provided on the grading rubric below. The research proposal will require the use of at least 12 studies, not just an informative article. You may use more than 12 sources, but at least 12 must be actual studies used in the literature section of the research proposal. The research proposal is a conceptual framework or road map for setting up or designing a study. You will not actually conduct the study but will only be proposing a study. The research proposal should be written in future tense. The research proposal should be written in third person. Further details about the research proposal have been covered in Session 1 of the course and in your textbook. If you have any further questions about the format of the research proposal or about what to include in the proposal, please feel free to contact your professor.

Hypothesis/Questions
Grading will be based upon properly stated questions that are testable or a clearly stated hypothesis statement that is testable. Hypothesis should include adequate IV(s) and DV(s) and should be properly stated. The hypothesis or questions should include your variable gap(s).

Definition of Terms
Grading will be based on providing adequate and clear definitions of the variables being used in the study (IV and DV), as well as defining other concepts that require a good understanding in order to read the proposal. Definitions should not be simple dictionary definitions.

Theoretical Framework
Grading will be based on how well you discuss the framework or logic you used as you approached the topic. It should include a discussion of other possible theories or frameworks that address the issue. If basing your study on a specific theory, your discussion would include a detailed discussion of the theory and its relevance to your study. The discussion will demonstrate the logic of the theory in relation to your topic and/or hypothesis. Explanatory studies have a theory guiding the study from the beginning. Exploratory studies provide a theoretical discussion after the data has been collected and analyzed that helps to put the findings into an organized and logical outcome.

Synthesis of Related Literature (Lit. Review)
Include at least 12 to studies in this section of your proposal. Grading will be based on a thorough discussion of how the information gathered relates to your study. Do not deal with each article separately, but rather synthesize the information you gathered that is related significantly to your study. This should read smoothly and not like a series of summaries linked together. You will take information from the “literature reivew” assignments and transform it into a single document. DO NOT SIMPLY PASTE THE FIRST TWO LIT REVIEW ASSIGNMENTS INTO THE PAPER.
