Write 5 short historical IDs. For each ID you will explain the significance of a methodological concept, pre-colonial environmental concept, or place. Be sure to address this larger significance in your answer.
For each ID, you should draw on a variety of materials from class to support your explanation (lecture, reading, film). A strong ID is at least one paragraph long (min 8-10 sentences or 170-200 words) and covers the complexity of the ID topic. It should also include at least one specific historic example.

This is an example of a good id.
Rinderpest Epidemic

From 1889 to 1897 rinderpest swept from Maasailand in East African to South Africa. The cattle disease wiped out entire herds across this vast stretch of the continent. Cattle in the same regions were central to the food supply, economic exchange, social networking, and the political order. As a result, the wave of cattle deaths constituted an ecological and social crisis. During these same years, German and British forces pushed further into Eastern and Southern African in an effort to claim territory. The weakened Eastern and Southern African societies mounted a surprisingly resilient resistance, but had been severely weakened by the rinderpest epidemic. European expansion in this case was greatly aided by ecological crisis. The colonizers, however, did not recognize this fact. Rather, they mistook the weakened state of the African societies and their environments as evidence of inferiority. They took what Meach and Learns might call a “snap shot” and assumed it was the natural state of Africa but one that could be improved with European management. In retrospect, it was simply justification for colonial rule.

Here are the five historical id
Snap Shot Methodologies
What are Snap Shot Methodologies and how do they relate to the study of the environment in Africa?
What is a good example of a “Snap Shot Methodology”?
Why have scholars of environmental policy in Africa criticized these methods? Do you find their arguments convincing, why?
(for this response you can also use the PDFs Pikirayi Environmental Data and Historical Process, McCann_tale, and togola_memories.)

Social Memory
What is this historical method for studying environmental history and how does it relate to pre-colonial environmental history in Africa?
How have different scholars employed this methodology? What kinds of questions does it help them to answer?
What type of history might you write with a social memory source? What are the advantages of these types of sources?
(or this response you can use the PDFs Pikirayi Environmental Data and Historical Process, McCann_tale, and togola_memories.)

Spiritual Management of the Environment and “Moral Ecology”
How have religious/spiritual approaches to the environment translated into the management of resources?
How would you define “moral ecology”?
What do specific examples of spiritual management tell us about pre-colonial perspectives on the environment?
How do these pre-colonial perspectives continue to impact discussions of the environmental resources today?
(for this response you can use the PDFs of Schmidt_historical_ecology_chapter5 and livingstoneconv pdf.)

Pre-colonial Food Security
How have our pre-colonial cases highlighted the importance of food production?
What social and political events have prompted food shortages?
How have different pre-colonial states and societies sought to assure abundance and/or food security?
How can those histories inform our current concept of food security?
(for this response you can use the PDFs Kima_environ and Kreike_ Hidden)

Keta Lagoon
What do we learn about coastal ecologies from the history of the Keta Lagoon?
How do people of the Keta Lagoon understand their relationship to their environment?
How did Anlo migrants learn about the Keta Lagoon and its ecology over time?
What role has the lagoon played in the social/political identity of its inhabitants?
for this final ID I attached a link that its necesarry to use as a source) https://libgen.is/book/index.php?md5=8A2E07992119ADD3B83529747534FC93
Down below I will attach sources I would like you to use if you have any questions feel free to ask me. I would reccommend to use two sources for each ID.
