DETERMINATION OF SPECIFIC HEAT OF A METAL

Attached you will find 2 attachments. attachemnt 1 is the Labook where you can find all the directions for the lab and other important information, everything needs to be based on specific experiment. Attachement 2 is a picture of results of experiment completed at home by me. You will need to find the average specific heat capacity based on results ( 24) ( this is the average you have to use, then implement using the formula M1C1 (T-T1)+M2C2 (T-T2)=0. Based on that result, you will need to find out what type of metal it is. ( listed on page 48 of lab book) You will need to read instructions below and write a report base on results using formula provided. Please read below.

What am I doing this week?
This week’s lab is a little more involved than other labs.

You must write a formal lab report for this lab exer-
cise.

The lab relates to specific heat, which is a topic that
we covered in Chapter 3. I’m pretty sure that everyone
hates specific heat, so this will make a wonderful topic
for writing a formal lab report (that’s sarcasm, folks).
A little more detail on what to do
1. The lab starts on page 46 in your Lab Book.

2. Read the introduction (pages 46 – 50). If the in-
troduction is confusing, I also provide a short ex-
planation of what’s going on in this lab below.

3. Do NOT answer any pre-lab or post-lab question.
4. Perform Experiment 1: Determination of Specific
heat of a metal (pages 52 – 54).
5. Do NOT perform Experiment 2: Determining the
energy in food.
6. You will now write up the results of Experiment 1
as a formal lab report.
7. I have included a rubric that I must use to grade
your lab report. You can find it here.

8. Please read the rubric before your write your re-
port.

9. If you have never written a formal lab report (and

even if you have), please read some pointers be-
low.

Aside from making you miserable, the purpose of a
lab report is for you to pretend that you’re trying to tell
someone else what you did in an experiment, how you
did the experiment, what results you got and what you
think the results mean. And the whole point is to make
this information as clear as possible.
What should my lab report look like?

1. Your report must have a title. The title is sup-
posed to succinctly tell the reader what you were

trying to learn in this exercise. I’ll give you a hint.
In this exercise, you’re trying to figure out what a
mystery metal object is made of by determining
its specific heat (because different types of metals
have different specific heats!).

2. Your report must have an Introduction section.
Pretend that you’re reading the report and you

have no idea what specific heat is. The introduc-
tion is supposed to give the reader enough back-
ground information to understand what you were

doing in the experiment and why you were doing
it (“Hey, specific heat is blah blah blah and we can
use it to do blah blah blah.”).
3. Your report must have a Methods section. The

methods section gives the reader the actual de-
tailed steps of how the experiment was per-
formed. But guess what? This is the easiest sec-
tion because what you SHOULD do is write some-
thing like, “I followed the procedures described

in…” and reference the correct pages in your lab
book and cite your lab book as a reference at the
end of your report. You don’t actually have to
write any details describing the procedure as long
as you reference the correct pages in your lab
book!!! Ain’t science grand?

4. Your report must have a Results section. The re-
sults section does exactly what it says. You de-
scribe the results that you got in your experiment.

That’s all you do. You write a paragraph or two
about your RESULTS. It might be a good idea to
reproduce Tables 2 and 3 on page 54 in your lab
book, too. DO NOT put the procedure into the
results section: just the results. If you measured
the temperature of things in your exercise, then

you put those temperatures into the Results sec-
tion. See? Easy, right?

5. Your report must have a Discussion section. In
the discussion section, you tell the reader what

you THINK your RESULTS mean. If you were try-
ing to figure out what a piece of metal is made of,

the discussion section is where you tell the reader
what you think the piece of metal is made of and
then you tell them why you think so.
6. Your report must have a References section. At
the very least, you should reference your lab book.

If you’re a huge nerd like me, then you can refer-
ence other resources, too.

7. Please make sure your sections are titled. For ex-
ample, the introduction should be titled Introduc-
tion.

8. Please type the document.
9. Please upload the document to BLACKBOARD.

10. I don’t care how many pages the report is. What I

do care about is that you have all the required sec-
tions and that your writing is clear and correct.

Some tips on writing well
• If you want some pointers on how to write well,
read the first two pages of this document titled
“How to Write.” It was written by a lawyer for
lawyers, but it’s one of the best guides that I have
read for writing clearly. And it’s short.
• Don’t write like you have a pole up your ass. Many
students feel like they have to use stuffy writing
because a lot of science is explained that way. The
whole point of writing in science is to be clear.
Stuffy writing isn’t necessary.

I read the introduction in the lab man-
ual and I am totally confused.

1. You are going to take a mystery metal from your
lab kit and you are going to perform the exercise
on pages 52 – 54 to try to determine what it’s made
of.
2. The way you will try to figure out what the metal
is made of is to try to figure out the specific heat
of the metal.
3. Different metals usually have their own unique

specific heats, so if you can figure out the spe-
cific heat of your mystery metal, you can look that

number up in a table and make a pretty good
guess as to what type of metal you have.

4. In fact, you can use the table on page 48 in your
lab book (Table 1) to help you make your guess.
5. The way that you figure out the specific heat of
your mystery metal is complicated, and I’m not
going to cover everything in detail here.
6. But, the general idea is this: you will heat the

mystery metal to the temperature of boiling wa-
ter (which is…?).

7. You will then take your really hot mystery metal
and dunk it into colder water.
8. The colder water will warm up and the mystery
metal will cool down.

9. You can then measure how much the tempera-
ture of the water went up (and how much the

temperature of the mystery liquid went down) to

figure out how much energy was transferred be-
tween the hot metal and the cold water.

10. You will also need to know the mass of the cold
water and the mass of the mystery metal, too.

11. All of this information will (hopefully) let you fig-
ure out the specific heat of the metal.

12. Once you know the specific heat of the metal, you

can look at Table 1 on page 48 to make a reason-
able guess as to what the metal is made of.

13. This is still a complicated lab and I know these
instructions don’t explain everything, but give it
your best shot.
