Students are responsible for reading Man’s Search for Meaning during the course and will write a 2-3 page double-spaced paper in APA Style that describes: 1) Frankl’s unique perspective on human psychology, 2) the relevance of that perspective to psychological topics of import to humanistic psychologists (e.g., free will, self-actualization), and 3) its potential therapeutic usefulness. This assignment will be graded according to the clarity and cogency with which each of these themes is described and connected to the text. It is worth 25 points.
The paper will be graded according to the following four criteria:
1. Frankl’s unique perspective on human psychology (6 points)
What is his perspective on human psychology? What specific experiences did he have that helped him form this view? (4 points) The student specifically cites the book. (2 points)
2. Relevance of Frankl’s perspective to psychological topics of import to humanistic psychologists (free will, etc.) (7 points)
How does Frankl’s view differ from mainstream psychology? How is this empowering for people who adopt a humanistic approach to psychology? What theories that were covered in class does Frankl’s theory specifically counteract? (5 points) Student specifically cites the book (2 points)
3. Potential Therapeutic Usefulness (6 points)
What is the name of Frankl’s approach to therapy? What does it encompass? How does it differ from the therapy practices we’ve studied in class? (ie: Psychoanalytic, Cognitive-Behavioral, etc.) How might this approach be practiced in a real world context? What difference does a focus on meaning have in a therapeutic setting? (4 points) Student specifically cites the book (2 points)
4. Organization of the Paper (6 points)
The student has included a thesis that generally states the thrust of his or her paper from the outset. (1 point) The paper is well organized; it is easy to find all components listed in the rubric. (1 point) The paper is thorough and coherent; all necessary information is included for a complete investigation of each topic. (1 point) There are few or no spelling or grammatical errors. (1 point) APA format is used correctly (excluding an abstract, and with a title page being optional). (2 points)
