Prompt
Write an essay that:
Explains the foundations and structure of the political philosophy of Liberalism. Be sure to address the following questions in your explanation: What are some of Liberalism’s typical features and principles? How did it develop into the dominant ideology in North America and western Europe? Explain how welfare liberalism, neoclassical liberalism, and libertarian ideology fit within Liberalism.
Explains the basic ideas of the political philosophies of (1) Conservatism, (2) Communitarianism, and (3) Marxism. You should identify the basic features or principles of each of of these ideologies. You should also explain how each of these ideologies can be seen as a critique of Liberalism. For the section on Marxism, you only need to address the materials assigned for Weeks 7 and 8.
Concludes with a discussion of which of these political philosophies you find most compelling. Explain why. There is not a correct answer here. Rather, I am looking to see you “thinking with” course materials.
Your response should include a discussion (and citation) of at least two thinkers who represent Liberalism and at least one thinker from Conservatism, one thinker from Communitarianism, and one thinker from Marxism. That’s a total of 5 citations.
Do not rely on dictionary definitions here! Instead, reference distinctions and definitions from the readings and our discussions during class.
You will be graded on
(1) your understanding and interpretation of the ideas and texts you choose to work with;
(2) the clarity of your presentation; and
(3) the quality of your writing.
