What are the biomechanical principles most relevant to the sport skill of interest?

Final Project – PHED 385 Biomechanics

Perform a 2-dimensional video analysis of a sport or exercise skill (except
basketball free throw) as a final project.

A. The general requirements are:

1. Research how an expert would perform the skill (use the Web or other resources).
2. Use a video from the Web as the expert (skilled) performer in
performing the selected skill and another member of your group as the novice (unskilled)
performer in performing the selected skill.
3. Observe and video both of the performances and develop stick figures.
4. Compare the novice to the expert performance and determine and document what changes are
needed in the novice performance to improve it toward the expert performance.
5. Be able to answer the following questions.
a. What are the biomechanical principles most relevant to the sport skill of interest?
b. What biomechanical principles are strengths and weaknesses for the novice performer?
c. What biomechanical principles are strengths and weaknesses for the skilled performer?
d. What intervention would you recommend for the novice performer and why?
e. What intervention would you recommend for the skilled performer and why?

B. Develop a proposal to accomplish this task and pass in a written report by the due date.

This will include:

a. Identifying the overall performance objective of the movement and describing the movement
using the movement analysis form.
b. Breaking the movement into “chunks”
c. Identifying the basic movement pattern(s)
d. Describing, in proper anatomical terms, the expected joint actions of all movement phases
e. Identifying which views and which joints of the subject need to be observed

C. Present your results to the class (15- 20 minute Powerpoint
presentation) which should include:

a. result of research
b. expert videos and stick figures
c. novice videos and stick figures
d. comparing of the novice’s performance with the expert’s and describing the biomechanical
differences between the two.
e. answers to the 5 questions in A5 above
f. conclusion
