DESCRIPTIVE WRITING
What is it? Descriptive writing does exactly what the name implies: it describes something in detail. The idea is to paint a picture in your reader’s mind with the words you put on paper. The reader should be able to visualize/ experience something just as you have when they read your work.
PURPOSE:
Help your reader visualize/ experience something just as you did by providing vivid description.
Paint a picture with words by choosing the perfect words that pack the most descriptive punch.
Use clear, concise vivid language that calls on the senses of the reader.
FORMAT: You will want to have a beginning, middle, and end.
Opening: The opening will include the hook, and details to set up the main statement.
Body: The body will be the description of what you are describing. Here is where you appeal to the 5 senses, drawing in vivid description with literary devices and descriptive vocabulary. Be sure to divide your description into separate paragraphs each time you change the topic of description.
Conclusion: Tie together your description and make your final points about what you are describing.
HOW TO:
Step One: Determine what you will describe.
Step Two: Brainstorm ideas writing down any words/ phrases that come to mind when you think about how your five senses experience what you are describing. Then, see what common themes there are and determine how you will organize your description into three body paragraphs.
Step Three: Write a first draft.
Step Four: Revise, edit and write a second draft.
Step Five: Revise, edit and write a final draft.
BRAINSTORMING:
What is my purpose in writing this piece?
What words/ phrases come to mind to describe my purpose?
What are the three or four most important pieces of information I can give to my reader to help them understand my purpose?
How would my five senses experience what is being described? What words can I use to relay the experience to my reader?
