Poetry is defined in a way where you can express your thoughts, feelings and also respond to the way you act. In the text, Kelly Mays states, “Yet, “poetry” seems to many of us a thing apart, something either to suffer, to cherish, or to simply be baffled and intimidated by precisely because it seems so arcane, so different and difficult, so essentially irrelevant to the rest of our lives.” This means that you can be able to express yourself in any way possible without feelings misjudged or treated differently by anyone else. Some concepts and strategies that I believe are relevant to the reading, responding and writing about poetry would be that you don’t have to have alliteration, rhymes nor have it make sense i the matter. The poem being written is a formulation of the concentrated imaginative experiences chosen in the language. This gives an open way to express yourself and not feel closed in. Some strategies from the section “Responding to Poetry” that I found useful were listening to the poem first. By just responding right away to what they are discussing you don’t give a vivid in depth connection with the reading. In order to really encounter the poem, you want to read it out loud and feel the way they wrote the poem when they first started writing.
