Ida B. Wells advocates that African Americans should claim their agency by migrating to the north, boycotting white establishments, and even registering for firearms to resist racial subjugation and violence. While she makes salient points on all these, argue why the registering of guns by African Americans is a good means for them to resist racial oppression or argue why it isn’t. How could it be a good strategy in fighting racism and bringing the community together or a dangerous strategy which might sabotage the black community? Considering historical and political issues, incidents and movements involving black people’s subjugation from colonialism, slavery and even Jim Crowism with the use of weapons, and even black people’s own use of guns against themselves, make an argument where you support or do not support Wells’ position.
Suggestion: When you write this or all your essays for this class, do not include the first person I/we/us/our. Don’t say I agree with Wells’ position. Rather, say something like: Wells has a legitimate position. Or simply say something like: In order to defend themselves from racist subjugation, Black people should become members of the NRA and arm themselves, for it is by doing so that their lives and freedoms will be taken seriously. Then go on to argue the legitimacy of this position, putting everything noted above about the topic in context. Good essays to recall for this topic are Rustin’s and Fanon’s.
