Title page should include the following information
In the middle of the page give;
Title: Identification of an Unknown Bacteria
Unknown Number;
Name of the microbe (that is not unknown anymore…….)
In the right lower corner provide;
Your name;
Subject and Section; BIOL108-?
2) Introduction should present a clear summary of the goals of the unknown assignment. Why identification of unknown microbes is important?
3) Present materials and methods (procedures) in a clear and logic manner, describe and discuss the chemistry of each test in detail.
3) Table of results. Your table should include following columns.
i) Name of the test
ii) Medium used
iii) (Your) Results (e.g., Positive, negative, beta hemolytic, sensitive, resistant etc., don’t write yellow color, jelly etc.)
iv) Significance of results (In this column write down only the names of microorganism from your unknown list that give the same results like your results; your unknown microbe will be among them)
4) Discussion of Results
Discuss in a systematic way to explain how you concluded that you had that particular
microorganism. Start your discussion with the list of unknown microorganism. Discuss
all of your results starting from Gram Staining. If you had any abnormal results, discuss
those circumstances that may have resulted in such results. Do not discuss procedural
details here.
5) Significance of your particular (unknown) microbe. Write down the basic characteristics of that particular microbe. Discuss whether that microbe is pathogenic (discuss diseases caused by that microbe), opportunist (discuss diseases caused by that microbe in any special circumstance), or spoilage microbe. This page should be in your own words (copy paste info is not acceptable) Full page information is required regarding significance of your unknown bacteria.
6) References
Report should be typed with font 12, Times Roman, and single spaced
1) Names of the microorganisms should always be Italicized or underlined
2) Write the complete scientific name for the first time and then you can abbreviate
the genus name. Never abbreviate the specific epithet.
3) Identification of unknown will not guarantee full marks assigned to this part as
half of the marks are assigned for a proper report
4) Your report should contain the proper title/heading for each section e.g.,
introduction, materials and methods, table of results, discussion of results, and
significance (of the bacteria you identified)
5) Describe the significance in your own words. Remember that “cut and paste” info
is not acceptable.
6) References should be written on a separate page
