W6 Assignment 1: Student Organization Letter

In this assignment, you are to draft an open letter to the student body, informing them about new state laws and their impact on student organizations.
You are the Director of Student Organizations for a small private university in Texas. Currently, there are over 100 student organizations on your campus. They include local fraternities and sororities, sport clubs, religious clubs, service groups, special interest groups, academic groups, and honor societies.
Some organizations have formally registered with the university using a simple one page application that is available in your office. The one-time application requests basic information like the group’s name, mission, officers, contact information, and advisor. Since there are no formal policies regarding student organizations, other student groups continue to act as university student organizations without going through the application process. While you do your best to encourage unregistered organizations to apply, some do not.
Additionally, each year you attempt to update contact and officer information from all registered student organizations, and typically only 20% of the registered groups respond. Moreover, you are not sure whether all the student organizations currently have advisers. As a matter of practice, many of the student organizations (both registered and non-registered):
Receive funding from the Students Association
Post information about their activities on university bulletin boards, sidewalks, and message boards
Hold activities on and off campus using the university’s name to identify themselves with the institution
Yesterday, you received word that the Texas Legislature had enacted Texas Education Code 51.9361. The president of your university asks you to review the statute. Since your small university does not have the funds necessary to hire legal counsel for this matter, the president has also asked you to determine:
What is the university required to do under the new law?
How should the new requirements be implemented on your campus to not only comply with the law, but improve student organizations?
Instructions
Locate and review the statute using Lexis. Determine the course of action the university is legally required to take, and how the new requirements can be implemented so as to improve student organizations.
Draft a 12 (300600 word) page open letter to the student orgnaizations, deliverable via mail or email, which:
Informs students about the new legal requirements
Demonstrates how the university’s implementation of the them will improve student organizations
