Intro: Joseph-Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)
is one of the most underappreciated composers of the late romantic, early
contemporary era of music. Previous examinations of the life of Ravel do not
thoroughly investigate his mental deterioration in his later years. Ravel’s
major work, Boléro, has long been considered his finest composition and
certainly his most memorable. This paper will: 1) provide a brief biography of
Maurice Ravel, 2) analyze the insistent repetition in his most famous work
Boléro , and 3) address how the aforementioned composition was shaped by mental
