For the second part of this assignment go into a familiar setting and document it as though you have never been there before. This is the more difficult part of the assignment. It is harder to see familiar as something extraordinary but use your sociological perspective to identify idiosyncrasies in your familiar world. The point here is to see the ordinary as extraordinary. The familiar should become unusual.
Write down where you were, the people’s behaviors and the rules of the environment, etc.
What are the social norms from the interaction that you have observed?
What statuses or roles are associated with what you have observed?
How are the people behaving? Are they in groups, are they alone?
If they are in groups what do you notice about the group dynamics?
What is the collective behavior in the environment or was there social control or both, in what ways was this behavior exhibited?
How many people were present? What are key behaviors cues that are associated with the environment?
How has society shaped the behavior of the individuals in that environment? In this environment identify deviant behavior, social control, social movements and collective behavior.
You are not limited to the questions that are listed here, take detailed notes, include what you see, how you felt during the observation and what you learned about social behaviors and yourself. Your reflection essay should be professionally presented and formatted using APA style. Be sure to cite the textbook and use it to define the relevant concepts. This paper should be at least 2-4 pages not counting the title page and reference section.
