Please write a four page essay on any interest group of your choosing.
Here are just a few suggestions:
NRA, NARAL, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, AARP, PETA, AFL-CIO, Christian Coalition, US Chamber of Commerce, American Medical Association, American Bar Association, Americans for Prosperity, MoveOn.Org, NAACP. These are just a few but you are free to do any interest group you want.
WARNING: This is not a history paper, nor a policy opinion paper. For example, if you choose to write a paper on the NRA, I do not need to know the history of the group, or your opinion on the Second Amendment or whether you think gun ownership is a public good. If you choose to write about Planned Parenthood, you should write about their functions as an interest group (the PPAF) NOT what they provide as a reproductive services operation (PP proper). The paper should also not opine about your views on abortion or whether funding contraception is a good idea- that is not the purpose of this paper! I want to know how their political operations function. How do they raise money? How do they spend the money? What methods do they use to achieve their political purpose? The paper should do what I detail below.
Your essay must:
Explain the mission and goals of the interest group.
Explain the methods the interest group uses to fund raise.
Explain the methods they employ to influence policy i.e. lobbying, donating to politicians, running advertisements, organizing protests etc. A strong essay will incorporate various examples from the research you have done.
Briefly opine, in a closing paragraph, as to whether you believe the interest group is achieving its mission.
The essay must incorporate at least four different citations for at least four different sources.
FEEDBACK FROM FIRST SUBMISSION:
Good start. A few points of advice. 1. Please make sure every sentence in which you borrow information from other sources you cite with either a footnote or endnote. If you don’t you are technically plagiarizing. 2. I’m confused by your reference to Timothy McVeigh. What did his terrorism have to do with the Christian Coalition? He clearly stated multiple times he was agnostic. His attack on the Murray building was- in his demented mind- a response to the WACO siege and Ruby Ridge killings at the hands of federal agents. 3. Try to add some specifics in regard to donations to politicians. How much? Which ones? A good resource for that info is opensecrets.org.
