Question:
Shakespeare’s comedies for all their sentiment are ironic rather than sentimental. They do
not deny the ruthless, violent, destructive other face of nature’s energies. Yet they take a
tolerant and genial view of vital appetites and desires. Comment on this assessment of
Shakespeare’s comedies by referring to two of the plays studied this semester.
